Biden’s Diagnosis Confirmed as Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Former President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his personal office released on Sunday. The cancer has already spread to his bones, signaling a more advanced stage of the disease.

The statement confirmed that Biden was evaluated last week after experiencing urinary symptoms. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the release noted.

Though the cancer is aggressive, the good news is that it appears to be hormone-sensitive, allowing for potentially effective management through current medical treatments.

Biden and his family are currently in Wilmington, Delaware, consulting with physicians to explore treatment options.

Medical Experts Weigh In: ‘Serious, But Treatable’

Experts say that while the spread to bone is severe and often not curable, treatment advancements offer hope.
Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist with Orlando Health, stated, “Even high-risk prostate cancer can allow patients to live relatively normal lives if managed effectively.”

Dr. Benjamin Davies of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center added, “There’s some good news here — newer hormonal and chemotherapy treatments have significantly extended patient longevity.”

These treatments, however, must be carefully balanced, as they can affect mood, memory, and overall quality of life.

Public and Political Response to Biden’s Health News

The diagnosis comes amid ongoing public concern over Biden’s health, especially after his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race following a poor debate performance against Donald Trump.

Despite political rivalry, Trump offered sincere support via Truth Social:

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis… We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, who now leads the Democratic campaign, also issued a statement on X:

“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with strength, resilience, and optimism.”

Former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton echoed similar sentiments, praising Biden’s leadership in cancer research through the Cancer Moonshot initiative.

Cancer Has Personal Meaning for Biden

Biden has long been a prominent voice in the fight against cancer. His son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. That loss fueled his efforts to accelerate cancer research.

As vice president in 2016, Biden led the White House task force on cancer. In 2022, during his presidency, he relaunched the Cancer Moonshot program, aiming to reduce U.S. cancer deaths by 50% over the next 25 years.

“It’s not just personal — it’s about what’s possible,” Biden said during a 2023 speech promoting $150 million in research grants.

What Happens Next

Biden’s doctors will determine the next steps in the coming weeks. Treatment may involve hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or radiation, depending on how his cancer responds.

According to Dr. Brahmbhatt, “Some treatments may affect memory, mood, and quality of life, so the approach must be careful and personalized.”
