Norris Takes Austrian Grand Prix Win as McLaren Tightens Grip on F1 Title Race

SPIELBERGLando Norris stormed to victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, claiming his seventh career win and trimming Oscar Piastri’s F1 championship lead to just 15 points after a thrilling McLaren one-two finish.

With Max Verstappen crashing out on the first lap due to contact with Kimi Antonelli, the title fight has narrowed to a clear two-horse race between McLaren teammates.

“We had a great battle… a lot of stress but a lot of fun,” Norris said after the race. “A beautiful one-two.”

Piastri Maintains Lead Despite Costly Pit Trouble

While Piastri briefly took the lead early in the race, a slow pit stop and a forced off-track moment with Franco Colapinto allowed Norris to reclaim control. Despite regaining lost ground, Piastri could not close the gap enough to challenge for the lead again.

“Probably could have done a better job when I got ahead,” Piastri admitted. “It was on the edge at times but a good fight.”

The Australian retains the championship lead with 15 points over Norris. Verstappen, who was taken out by Antonelli and failed to score, now trails by 61 points.

Ferrari and Mercedes Keep Pressure in Midfield

Charles Leclerc secured third place, marking his third podium in four races, while Lewis Hamilton followed in fourth.

George Russell, fresh off his win in Canada, finished fifth for Mercedes, with Liam Lawson earning his best result of the season (6th) for Racing Bulls.

Fernando Alonso defended well to claim seventh, with Sauber’s Bortoleto and Hulkenberg in eighth and ninth. Esteban Ocon rounded out the top 10 for Haas.

Constructors’ Update and What’s Next

McLaren now enjoy a 207-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors’ standings, further asserting their dominance. Ferrari moved back into second place despite the absence of team principal Fred Vasseur, who missed the race due to personal reasons.

Next up: British Grand Prix (Silverstone) — Round 12 of the 2025 F1 World Championship next weekend.
